Barb Adams and Alma Allen of Blackbird
Designs have joined with the Spencer Museum
of Art to share historical schoolgirl samplers with
the cross stitchers of today.
There is much to admire when perusing these lovely examples of needlework. Figures stroll through gardens of enormous flowers, baskets can be as large as a house and blossoms almost as big as a person can float through the sky. Still the casual observer strolling through the garden feels that all is right with the world … it is folk art at its best!
You will find examples of samplers spanning the years of 1710 – 1841. Barb and Alma include nine projects to stitch based on these wonderful works of art that were crafted by children so long ago.
The June stockings celebrate family. The Double Wedding Ring quilt pattern is perfect for the Here Comes The Bride Stocking. We all know you don't find babies under a cabbage leaf; the stork brings them! Stitch the New Arrival Stocking with the baby's birth date and initials. The Honeysuckle Vine Stocking recalls the sweet aroma of a lazy summer day.
Spring is in the air! Sweet smells waft in the breezes, birds sing their morning serenades and the brilliant yellow of daffodils lift spirits after the long winter months. Celebrate by stitching the Springs Arrival Stocking. Mid-month add a touch of blarney and honor St. Patrick's Day with the Wild Clover Stocking. The soft green shades of floss in the Quaker Fragments Stocking are just right for Spring and remind us of the motifs used in antique Quaker samplers.
As we begin to enjoy cooler weather in the Midwest, the trees are changing their wardrobe. No longer are they content with their dresses in shades of green only gowns of red, scarlet, orange and lemon yellow will do.
Celebrate the glorious fall colors by making the Autumns Bounty stocking.
Cosmos defy Mother Nature and continue to bloom even through frosty mornings. Our Colorful Cosmos stocking reminds us to enjoy the last blooms of summer.
The Vintage Stocking is a study in quiet harmony. The small twigs in these sweet motifs remind us that winter will soon be here.
The July stockings have a patriotic theme. Our beautiful Stars and Stripes wave proudly in the breeze in the Fourth of July stocking. The Bountiful Stars Stocking is a reflection of a traditional quilt pattern and will be a quick and easy project to stitch. All those stars remind us of fireworks that brilliantly light up the sky. You will have a bouquet that will never wilt when you stitch our Summer Roses Stocking. This little project celebrates the lush blooms that grace our gardens.

beginnings. This little sampler will remind you to make a toast to cherished friends, family and lovely moments in your life. Finished Size 15" x 5-1/3" when stitched on 30 count.
